Medical management of obesity

Obesity is a multidisciplinary disease cause by modern way of life, increased food intake, absence of exercise, stress and anxiety as well as hormonal, genetics and other unknown factors. Therefore its management is rather difficult requiring team approach that applies dietary measures, exercise programs, pharmacological therapy, behavioural modification and psychological support.

When excess weight is 20-25 kg or more operative intervention is necessary for radical and permanent weight reduction. This is because severe forms of obesity usually failed to respond in more simple medical management with diet, exercise etc. In that case endoscopic methods such as intragastric balloon placement or minimally invasive laparoscopic methods such as Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and laparoscopic gastric bypass are used for permanent weight loss.
